What causes an intermittent black monitor screen?

Post by Bill Ford »

It only lasts about 4/6 seconds, and only occasionally. Would it be the video card, or the CPU, the CPU does not have the video feature, sound does not stop just black screen. I'm thinking Video card. Thanks.. Bill

I might be thinking monitor before video card. Could be an intermittent problem in the monitor - power supply, backlight...

If you have/had another monitor to try, that would help to isolate the problem.

I'll try that, I'm using a 28" TV for a monitor.

Check the cable between the monitor and computer. Might be a bad connection or a failing cable if there is a bend in it somewhere.
Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous; praise is meet for the upright. Give praise to the Lord with the harp, chant unto Him with the ten-stringed psaltery. Sing unto Him a new song, chant well unto Him with jubilation. For the word of the Lord is true, and all His works are in faithfulness. The Lord loveth mercy and judgement; the earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.

Changed the input from HDMI2 to HDMI 1, so far so good. Computers are weird creatures!

What was the make and model of the video card that failed? How old was it?

It's over a year old, bought from Newegg, only marking on it is AMD radeon. with 1 DVI output, don't have papers, been trying to retrieve order history for more info. It was/is a cheap card.
