Border didn't quite fit on the bottom. Surely an add on.
Currently own, 6 Groner-tone lap steels, one 1953 Alamo Lap steel, Roland Cube, Fender Champion 40

All Stringmaster had the chrome diamonds, but not with the black diamonds behind them. :whoa:

I would guess someone took the necks apart and made the hole bigger than it was originally and had to get creative to keep it covered up

No, I would guess it was done for appearance sake.
No need to make the holes bigger.

Maybe covering up a mistake is what I meant

It looks like there is some old touch up paint on the edge of the diamond. The black probably hides some kind of mistake. Kind of like the oversized plates you can get for a light switch, for when you screw up the cutout.

Thanks for looking and for the comments, much appreciated! Its clearly a ‘One-Off’ owner mod or a Fender employee with too much time on his/her hands haha! Although to be honest you’d expect a owner mod would be a little more adventurous and exciting! The mod is on the audience side two diamonds but not the other side. There are a few minor paint touchups here and there around the steel (and not just the diamond area) There no sign from my eyes of any covering up of any ‘problem’ although that was a possibility in my mind, thanks again!
