Guide to learn pedal steel WANTED

Post by Emil Wester »

Im currently learning pedal steel, i know the basic major chords, and can play simple melodies, and recently i got stuck on what to learn next.

Can anyone write some sort of step by step list on what to learn? It would help me much

The Winnie Winston book should keep you busy for a while:

What Jack says . That book is the best , I don't know of any other book that is comparable. I am revisiting mine after buying it 30 years ago .

I would recommend taking some Skype lessons with John McClung, he has the most organized method of learning I have ever seen! Great guy and player as well. He is easy to find here on the forum.

Hey Emil, I'm the teacher Doug Taylor so kindly recommended.

My sequential and easy-to-understand curriculum starts with basic picking and blocking; then goes through the 3 positions for major chords and using those in a bunch of chord progressions; touches on listening skills so you can figure out chords and melodies by ear; then minor and dominant 7 chords; and much more. You learn pertinent songs throughout.

My emphasis is not on licks, but musicianship to help new players survive the bandstand.

So if you can, work on things in that order on your own. If you'd like some guidance and are up for Skype lessons, contact me, please. It's helpful to have help and feedback.

All best,
John McClung
