This is an extension of this thread I started a few months back https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=388462
I got a chance to compare this directly through my Tweed Deluxe cabinet and here is my experience.
The Quilter is wonderful, but not quite as tweedy as I had hoped. It does get a very realistic tube type breakup, but it covers maybe 1/10th of the subtle variety of breakup that the Deluxe does. It gets nowhere near as dirty. Pedals could take you the rest of the way I am sure. It is brighter and cleaner and more versatile with its very well designed controls. Seems very similar to a Deluxe Reverb. The speaker in the tweed is an 8 ohm and I am curious how this effects the Quilter output. Full output is through a 4 ohm speaker. The Quilter is only about 2/3rds as loud as the Deluxe and probably not giggable (through an 8ohm speaker at least) unless the gain is fully dimed. Vol is very low unless the gain is at least on 4 and it starts to get dirty after that.
The XLR is nice, but I am not sure how those work exactly. It is also nice to have an FX loop and headphone jack, and it weighs next to nothing! I found mine slightly used for $200 so no big worries. All that said, does it replace a tube amp? I would say yes it really does sound natural. For most steel guitar players this would fall way short for loud clean power, but for me I am really happy with it. It is perfect for a practice amp and a minimalist setup. I just can't decide if I can part with my Deluxe |

I use one regularly at church, XLRing thru the main board in front. Sounds great, never push the gain past 9 o'clock, nice and clean on the '65 setting . I recently tried it alone through 4 ohm 15" telonics speaker in a Huff cab , at a place where I normally use a nashville 112 and was quite impressed. No problem getting what I needed, although I did push the gain up some. Can't beat hauling a 2 # amp with a 18# cab around. I wouldn't ditch the deluxe reverb though. |

Have you tried it as a preamp (for the additional tone shaping and reverb) in front of your old Deluxe? I have, and I like it. _________________ GFI Expo S-10PE, Sho-Bud 6139, Fender 2x8 Stringmaster, Supro consoles, Dobro. And more. |

I definitely will, I am pretty bad with this stuff and I didn't even realize that was an option. I'm guessing you use the 9v power supply I stead of the 24v? |

You can use either power supply. I have used it as a pre-amp many times through various amps, including some peavey bass amps and loved the results. |

It should be real simple. Run your guitar to the 1/4" input of the Superblock (either power supply). Run a second cable from the 1/4" output on the SB to one of the four inputs on you Deluxe amp. As a starting point, I'd set the Deluxe where you like it already and then experiment with the SB, beginning with low gain and flat EQ. _________________ GFI Expo S-10PE, Sho-Bud 6139, Fender 2x8 Stringmaster, Supro consoles, Dobro. Ok I am learning. I am starting to like the idea of a little pedalboard. |
