Presonus wrote me, and said because of the new Digital board I purchased to use at home a while back, I have free software coming. Anyone familiar with any of this software? Since they're free, why not download one or two,ya know? But how difficult are they for a puter illiterate like me?

George,

You've asked an interesting question that is difficult to give a yes or no answer to. The best answer I can give is, it depends. Do you use a software DAW? Do you use plugins with your DAW? Do you have a desire to learn how to use the virtual instruments and effects? All of the products mentioned are plugins that can be used in a software based DAW.

Considering you purchased a Presonus board I'm surprised the software package doesn't include any version of Studio One.

Well NOT Free to me, but 149 bucks for the upgrade to v6 Professional from Sweetwater... Been using Studio One since v2, and love it. The new features in v6 are pretty interesting. Just starting to dig into the new stuff.

Same here. Just keeps getting better. I'm glad they are not going the subscription route, even though they have the Sphere if you want it that way.

Does the Presonus Studio 6 have video software like Pro Tools?

In the latest upgrade about a year ago, Presonus put a little extra thought into their "video" track. Previously items you could not do, but can now, is cut and paste selections, slide it around on the time line and line it up much easier with an audio track by sight, rather than punching in numbers that were extremely difficult to use. But it is still very basic and for video editing beyond a few basic tasks, you're much better off with a dedicated video editor. It would compare with trying to track a live band session on Vegas Pro (or any video editor for that matter) versus using proper audio software.
I wouldn't expect much more down the line regarding improvements as most Presonus users would prefer they stick to the audio side of things.
That said, organizing your workflow and using dedicated software for each of those areas, has never been really an issue for ME. But if you want to make basic "Youtubes" etc only using Presonus, it's very feasible. Just don't expect fancy transitions, color correction or any video enhancements for that matter. The Presonus video track and basic features have made it MUCH easier to use as a reference track

Re the original post...now a year old...as a person heavily involved with audio software, I wouldn't clutter up my computer with any of that. Replying a year later, may benefit others, but a lot is that stuff is the typical free or lite versions or versions not really useful to those with a desire for a deeper association with computer recording. That said, the flagship program from Predonus, Studio One Pro is a very in depth program, which I believe has now passed ProTools in current, 2023 features and quality, even though PT is and still remains the industry standard for various other reasons
