Anyone had an luck using one of these instead of an amp? Thinking of picking one up to use with my steel to reduce the amount of stuff I have to carry.

It's my main rig. Care has to be taken with input level, since most pedal steel pickups are hotter than a guitar pickup. I use this to manage it, and as a tuner out:

I've even gone so far as to use a Headrush FRFR-108 full frequency monitor, so it's like I have an amp, and the xlr out on it to PA.

I use the HX Effects rather than the stomp because I don't need the amp Sims. It seems they mostly model distorted tones. I've always been a clean amp guy with pedals for dirt so the HX Effects works well. There are so many eq options that you can emulate Peavey-like clean tones very effectively.

I use a Hilton VP and the signal is pretty hot. I use the global settings to set the steel input to line level then increase that input's gain using HX Edit to balance it.

Typically, I run a 6 string into the input set at instrument level and use a return 2 block at line level in parallel for my steel. It's like having a mini-mixer built right in. It makes for quick instrument changes too.

This works well for me and doesn't require extra gear.
