I was wondering if someone may know who the steeler is here, I've also seen Faron Young on this same show with the same steel player. It certainly does go way back.

That is Howard White on steel acting like he's playing. He wasn't working for Connie though. I'm trying to remember who's band that was. Been a minute since I've seen those videos.

That clip is from the 1965 movie, "Second Fiddle to a Steel Guitar", which features a couple dozen of Nashville's hottest stars of the 1960's. I believe that all the performances in the movie were lip-synced versions of earlier recordings. The movie is a great snapshot of the stars of the early 1960s doing some of their biggest hits, and the steel on that particular Connie Smith cut sounds like it was done by Pete Drake.

I'm pretty sure the steel on "Once..." was Weldon Myrick.

I only met Howard one time, at an ISGC sometime in the late 1990's. He told a joke that had about a half dozen steel monsters soiling themselves with laughter, unfortunately inappropriate for Forum publication.

Yes Herb is correct of course. Here's Weldon Myrick behind the Sho~bud Permenant he cut on "Once a Day" and the earliest Connie Smith stuff and Bill Anderson.
Anyone know what happened/where this Sho~Bud is now???

Bill that is Lloyd Green doing all the recording at Columbia Recording Studio in Nashville with Connie there in 1974 and around that era.
If you listen closely; that is Lloyd Double recording that solo.

AS that steel guitar recorded twice from my Mentor is what inspired me later on, to double record this intro and last half solo with my Ex-Miss Leslie>

Oh, BTW... that was Merle Kilgore introducing Connie on the clip.

I haven’t watched that one in years, but in that one or another movie, same timeframe and genre, there is a lot of Stu Basore in the video.

You're right, Bill! Stu can be seen in the same movie playing for Kitty Wells. Stu played in her band from about 1963 to 1967, when he went with Ray Price's band. He was also featured playing in the Robert Altman movie "Nashville", and his steel playing is also the first thing you hear in the Stanley Kubrick film "Full Metal Jacket", as Johnny Wright's song "Hello Vietnam" was used as the opening theme.
