Facebook auto scrolls.

As I scroll down in Facebook near the bottom it starts scrolling all by itself. Have to scroll back up and start where it left off. Any clues? Dale.

Yep. I've got the exact same thing. I read a friend's description of a fix he tried that "seemed to be working" and it did not appeal to me (over my head). I can't find it now. His situation and mine are with Firefox.
Is yours?

I'll guess you're using Firefox?

A known issue. Nothing you can do until Mozilla figures it out.

The Chrome browser does not appear to be affected.

I use Firefox as my primary browser and have the Facebook auto-scroll problem too. I was able to restart in Firefox Troubleshooting Mode and that cured the problem. But, it ruined my browsing experience as it disabled all my personalizations. My current version is Fx 103.0

Here are some things I tried that sometimes worked, or didn't work at all.
  • Launched in Troubleshooting Mode (helped)
  • Regular mode. Disabled add-ons one at a time (didn't help)
  • Updated Malwarebytes, then re-enabled its browser plugin (helped for a while)
  • Opened Facebook in Chrome (fixed the problem)
  • Opened Facebook in Edge (fixed as well)
  • Made Chrome my default browser, then opened Firefox
  • Declined to make Firefox my default browser. Closed it for the night.
  • Came upon this discussion late at night. Opened Facebook in Firefox to check it out... (problem is GONE!)
I don't know if the problem was fixed silently. But, I will keep checking it out to see if that's the case. If it's really fixed I will go back to using Firefox as my default browser.

I couldn't find anything in the release notes regarding the auto-scrolling of Facebook being fixed. But, the problem hasn't returned as of this moment. If it does return I will post again and probably also file a bug report.

BTW..Wiz,

In addition to your steps, I also took the step of "refreshing" FF, resetting flags, etc back to the default state while retaining bookmarks.

I spoke too soon. The problem just returned. Facebook is auto-scrolling as I mouse down the page. It is impossible to read any posts when this happens. Back to Chrome until they fix the problem!

Okay. I disabled all extensions, restarted Firefox, opened Facebook and scrolled all the way down, with no bouncing or hesitation. I then enabled the Malwarebytes Browser Guard add-on and tried Facebook again. So far, no problem. When I activated U-Block Origin the problem returned, intermittently.

It seems to me that some of the recent security improvements are causing extensions, plug-ins and add-ons to cause Facebook to auto-scroll as it loads more posts when you scroll down. The browser alone doesn't appear to cause it without any add-ons active.

It IS better here. Not perfect. FWIW, I swapped Adblock+ with uBlock. No change in behavior.

The Chrome experience is still superior.

I've noticed, from day 1, that it only happens when I've scrolled down quite a bit. When I refresh and start at the top again it takes a lot of scrolling to get down to out-of-control territory. It reminds that I used to use "Social Fixer" (I no longer have it installed) and one of its options was more or less "prevent infinite scolling after 50 posts..." Something like that. I never knew what it referred to but right now that sort of sounds like what they were trying to address.

Same here. Good to know I thought it was in my equipment. Another reason this Forum is so helpful.

And, it's baaaack. Firefox 100.3.0.1. I scrolled down the page on Facebook and the posts kept on auto-scrolling on their own. I am going to file a bug report.

I use Safari on Mac High Sierra and don't have those scrolling problems. It also uses less resources than Chrome for sure, probably Firefox, too.

I want to let our Firefox users know that the Facebook auto-scrolling problem is being discussed on three Bugzilla threads. I am involved in the discussions and have been trying different settings and reporting on my findings. Apparently, the code gurus came up with a fix that is due to be rolled out soon...

"Target Milestone: --- → 106 Branch"

Interestingly, the same problem was occurring on Google Chrome in July of 2022. It has since been fixed.

Evidently, Facebook has changed the way they deliver past posts and their new code or feed flow is breaking some browsers that had no such trouble before these changes were rolled out. Facebook has not commented yet.

If any of you want to get involved PM me and I will send you a link to join Bugzilla, a division of Mozilla.

FWIW..

I also have Chrome and Edge running and they both exhibit similar symptoms, albeit to a lesser degree.

Such is life.

This cropped on my computer aobut the same time it did here. There have been at least a couple of Firefox updates since then, and I no longer have the scrolling problem. I occasionally come across weird problems banking or with certain websites. I will use MS Edge when these little annoyances occur. Microsoft products seem to be the standard, and sometimes you just have to surrender and use their software to get things done.

I found a band-aid fix until Mozilla releases Fx 106. I went under the hood using about:config and looked up the entry browser.cache.disk.capacity and increased it by a factor of 2x to 307200. Facebook takes a little longer to load a page now, but the post jumping is almost gone completely.
