My Hilton pedal goes not even a quarter way from full and starts to have a bad overdriven sound. Does anyone work on these or can give me some advice on my next step to try to fix it?

Talk to Keith. He built it, he can fix it.

It may not be the pedal. The Hilton has a very high output and you should look at the next stage in the chain. I have the input gain on my amp set at 3

The one I have is an older one, and has a trimpot adjustment on the bottom for gain. Mine, too, was turned up so high it distorted when I first bought it. After I turned the trimmer down so that it was no louder than my passive pedal, it worked fine.
