First time

Post by Earnest Bovine »

Setting up in a bar in Simi tonight, and the club owner looks at my axe and says "We've had about a hundred and fifty country bands in here, and that's the first time I've seen one of those." First Emmons push-pull?, I was thinking. Wrong .. first steel guitar.

That's really sad. Hopefully it will start a trend.

The "first steel guitar" part would seem to contradict the "We've had a hundred and fifty country bands" part IMHO.
Many play better than I do. Nobody has more fun.

I have worked in that part of California several times and had a cousin that lived in Simi Valley and spent a lot of weekends with him. Never found a Country Band or a Country Bar or Club in Simi Valley. But over the mountain South was Chatsworth and at Devonshire St. there was a very nice Country Club. Live Band every night I think but I cannot remember the name of it. Also West of there at Ventura was a nice country club but cannot remember the name of it. Getting OLD just SUCKS, ha. Had a lot of fun at both places. Lot of country girls that new how to two-step. I felt right at home. J.R. Rose

Earnest: wish I lived closer so I could come out to Simi Valley and hear you play.

JR: let me take a shot. Was it Ryan’s Roundup in Chatsworth, and the Ban Dar in Ventura?

It was the Ban-Dar in Ventura all right, packed house Friday and Saturday nights but had live music most every night. Ryan's does not sound right. But I am talking 25 plus years ago so it could have changed names. It was located on Devonshire & DeSoto Ave just East of Topanga Canyon Blvd. (State 27 Hi-way) You would think that if I can remember that I could remember the name?? J.R.

Fish, it might have just been called the Roundup at that time. J.R.

On the corner of Devonshire & Owensmouth...Ryan's Roundup became JR's Cowboy Palace in the 80's, and is now called the Cowboy Palace Saloon. I still do gigs there... I'll be there this Wednesday.

Well Thank You so much Skip for clearing that up. It has been such a long time since I was their. It is good to hear that it is still going and having live bands. Good Luck and keep on picking. J.R. Rose

Hey Tim, I think you got lost along the way here. You might want to move this to the right subject. J.R.

Doug created this post …was just asking a quick question that he may see easier. Thx.
