Another "Who Plays Steel" Question

Post by Walter Stettner »

A beautiful song from Bluegrass Band Chris Jones & The Night Riders and their 2021 album "Make Each Second Last".

No fancy solo but some really nice and tasty back-up (Steel coming in during the first Mandolin break). Anybody know who is playing?

It’s David Johnson. A multi instrumentalist who has several of his own CDs out. Mostly bluegrass.
I don't know much but what I know I know very well.
Carter S-10 3X5, Peavey Nashville 112, plus Regal dobro and too many other instruments to mention.

That is some great sounding music. Thanks for posting the link. Don't know who the steel player is.

Since there is no fiddle or Dobro in the band, The steel plays the fills and breaks that most Blue Grass band have Fiddle or Dobro, Makes for some nice soft listening music.

I grew up in Blue Grass music. I get together and jam with some Blue Grass friends and relatives, Playing steel. Even some of the die hard blue grass people say steel has a place in Blue Grass. Especially in Ballad and Story songs.

Steel guitar in bluegrass music is a nice texture. David Johnson is a great player. The Osborne Brothers used Hal Rugg on recordings and on the Opry. Doug Jernigan toured with Jim & Jesse and played on recordings with J. D. Crowe. Jimmy Crawford came to the Opry playing non pedal steel with Wilma Lee and Stoney Cooper. I was privileged to play on a cut on top tier bluegrass group The Po Ramblin' Boys first CD, a version of The Honky Tonk Downstairs.
