Thinking about Al Marcus

Post by John Poston »

Never knew him personally but miss him a lot on here.

Back when I was first getting into playing standards on C6 he had a couple old set lists from back in the day he had posted online that are a real snapshot of history. Gave me some good tune ideas.

That's pretty cool.

As well - when I was starting on steel (U12) and enquiring about different coped / tuning options he chimed in with a bunch of ideas he'd developed over his life. He had an E6/9 variant he called "lean and mean". The idea of breaking with convention to develop a very utilitarian but condensed coped led me to create my own 5x5 universal coped.

I also nearly bought his gorgeous sunburst-finished flamed maple MSA S12U - but I think he wanted $1500 for it.. shockers !!! Which seemed like a lot 20 years ago when you could find the plain maple MSA U12s for $1200. Always had regrets about not buying it.

His lifetime of music memoirs on his personal website were great.

His set list has a bunch of titles straight out of my jazz standards piano book. I'll have to give some a,try!

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. RIP AL!
