I was listening to Phases and Stages last night and was really impressed with the steel playing on 'Bloody Mary Morning', I called Chris Templeton about it and and thought it must have been either Buddy or Jimmy Day, but looked it up on Allmusic.com and found out it was the great John Hughey. Take a listen, so tasty!

yes John's all over that album, on both necks... one of my absolute favorite records. as far as I know it's the only Willie album to feature him

Yeah, John was the best, loved his work on Richard Betts' 'Highway Call' album too, one of the best 'steel albums' in my book!

I was surprised since, I never knew that John played on any Willie albums before, you learn something new every day.

Buddy called anything played above the 12th fret, "Hugheyland".
Thanks, Craig.

That Betts album is great. Hand Picked is a great jam to practice with.

I met John not long after Highway Call was released. He said he was really surprised to get the call to play on that album. He was allowed free reign to play what HE wanted. John is my all time favorite. Glad I got to know him.
