I have a Telonic’s X12 pickup on my Williams SD12 Extended E9, and I am finding it too bright on the top strings for my liking. I like the tones of the “Old Sho-Bud†but of course who doesn’t. This pick up is a great pickup and I have tried everything to get it to please my old ears. I am leaning towards a single coil….am I right in considering this? My Mullen SD10 has their single coil and sounds great to me. However is there anything else to compare out there.?

I would imagine Scott Swarz could probably build you something similar to the old 'Bud's characteristics to fit your Williams. Search his forum posts for his contact info.
You might check with Bill Rudolph to see if he has one of the single coils he used to install on his Williams guitars as well. |

I HATE talking pickups because invariably there's the need to describe the sound of one and I can't/won't do it.

I have a Telonics pickup with twin blades (I forget the model #) in my Williams 12. I like it ok but I'm always wondering about other pups. I got a Z (ZB-based) pup from Scott. It was good but I decided that I liked the smoother compression of the Telonics humbucker. But lately I'm tempted to go back the Z again....it has something.
I have installed Z pickups in a couple of my friend Stu's guitars and he simply loves them. Ironically, most recently I put one in his brand new Mullen...ironic because he does NOT like the Mullen SC pup.
The Z is single coil but...different. But Scott also does traditional singles.
Also, he will definitely work with you to make a pole-piece pickup that matches the Williams string spacing. He is very aware of this. |

Both of the steeltronics pickups are traditional single coils just different magnet structures. Like the difference in a P-90 and a strat pickup. One had magnetic pole pieces and one does not. One nice thing though is that the Z series like a p-90 had non-magnetic screw poles which can be adjusted per string. I'm not aware of any magnetic pole pickups save a few oddball 6 string ones where a magnetic pole pieces can be adjusted up and down. |
