my father built a lot of 9 and 11 string guitars for players. i have access to some of his parts in keyless format and wondering if this was just a fad going on years back or if there is a market for such.
parts will not go to waste so i plan on giving it a try so is there any thoughts on these steels?
he built some of the firsts, builder came out say an eleven, he went 12,they would make a 12 and he made a 13, they made a 13 and he made a 14.
i often asked him if it would be a pedal harpsicord. he stopped at 14 but i often wondered how far it could go. i cannot handle 6 much less 14.

it is an interesting concept how there have been so many string configurations. Not sure how popular 14 is now. I see posts on occasion where someone is asking who would build one. I saw a 9 string pedal master on ebay one time. it was keyless.

When I got an 11 string ZB I found the sweet spot (for me). Like all things Pedal Steel - it's very individualistic. Winking

I have an 11 string EXCEL. I had it in a quasi Universal tuning but recently changed to more standard E9 with low E on the 11th string. Mine has 4+5.

I spend a lot of time on my 8 string Fender, and I love it, but at times I wished I had just one more string. Laughing

Are you thinking of assembling some 9 and 11 string guitars or unloading the parts?

no, i finally disposed of a lot of older parts and now focusing on recovering his material cost. when i find something interesting, i will pursue it. i was around when these were made but i only machined parts, he did all the engineering.
there is a d9 on ebay right now and asking 2,700+ for it. made around nov 2000.
my goal is not to make a killing on steels, just not letting such valuable material becoming beer cans.
thanks for all the replies.
