I've got a 30s 10 string Ricky and the horseshoe pickup is quite microphonic. I've heard of people remagnetizing them, and maybe it needs a rewind, I know very little about all that. I've seen people talk about this in the past but can't remember specific names. Any suggestions?

I'm in Portland, OR in case there happens to be someone local, but I could also ship it...

Thanks,
Baron

Search here for member Rick Aiello. I think he's the horseshoe man around here if he's still active.

Baron,
Although re-magnetizing is a good idea, I don't think it has much to do with microphonics in a pickup. From what I understand, "potting" the pickup windings in wax or something similar is the way to reduce microphonics. If you are able to get in touch with Rick Aiello, he is definitely the guy to ask. I'm sure Tom Brantley could also answer your questions. I've been meaning to address the same issue with 3 8-string Rickenbacker pickups I have so I hope others will post with comments.

Contact Jerry Sentell in CA, Tom Brantley in NC or Rick Aiello.... I believe in VA.
Easy fix... I think that Jason Lollar no longer does rewinds.... but you could check. He is in WA.

Tom Brantley did one somewhat recently for me. It’s great and couldn’t have been easier.

I don't know if he does rewinds...and this may not really qualify as local...but Todd Clinesmith is a few hours south in Oregon from you. And I know his newly made horseshoe pickups are just fantastic sounding, my favorite pickup at present. But if you're really wanting something local-ish, you might try contacting him and seeing if he has the bandwidth/interest in the project.

+1 for Tom Brantley. He rewound/redid a Ricky eight string pickup for me a few years back. Outstanding in all regards. He was good, his prices were reasonable, and his turnaround time was very fast.

The pickup being microphonic, as stated previously, is usually because the coil wire is loose and resonating. The only remedy is to wax pot the coil. The only other source would be if another part of the pickup was loose and picking up vibrations, but that should be quickly noticeable.
