Hello folks,

The first album from my lap-steel-and-piano film music project Kinbom/Brandenburg is out today via London-based label Float! You may listen to it (and order a numbered limited edition CD) here:

https://fredrikkinbom.bandcamp.com/album/madame-vega

It is a collaboration with composer/pianist Hans-Jörn Brandenburg (Tom Waits, Kronos Quartet, The Tiger Lillies…), we have composed and recorded two film soundtracks to date. There is lap steel on 10 of the 12 album tracks. The one I used the most is my 1939 Vega Console Electric, which also lent its name to several tracks, and to the album title, “Madame Vega”. Smile This bulky, heavy but great sounding console steel is a different beast from my other lap steels. It kind of feels like playing a piano crossed with a lap steel, as there is not a narrow neck surrounded by air, but a wooden “hand rest” for both hands. This affected what I wrote and how I played a lot. And we ended up with several “Madame Vega…” tracks. Smile

But my Lap King Rodeo (with Lollar Charlie Christians) is also on there (“Nollendorf Neptune”, with a Boss OC-3 octave pedal, tracking octaves on the low strings, but not the top ones, so a “2-in-1” slide bass and lap steel), as is my Burgin baritone Weissenborn (“Notre Dame” and “Waltzing With Whales”) and 1937 National New Yorker (“April In November”, and the double tracking of the Vega on “Madame Vega’s Cuban Dream”).

Anyway, I hope you will enjoy all or at least some of it! And many thanks in advance for any CD orders in these tough-for-musicians times - any order is very much appreciated! And for those who want to stream the album via Apple Music, iTunes, Spotify etc., here is the link for that:

Thanks for listening!

Cheers from springtime, locked-down Berlin,

Fred

Bump of this as today is Bandcamp Friday, meaning all proceeds go to the artist. If anyone is interested in a numbered CD, here they are:

Hi Fred,
I haven't listened all the way through yet but I just ordered a copy. I love this collaboration. I also really like the inclusion of the harmonium on so many songs. It has a breathy organic sound that blends very well with your minor-key lap steel. I especially like the fact that the recording is so much of a tribute to the beautiful Madame Vega! Smile

Thank you very much Bill for your CD order and your kind words! I hope you will enjoy the CD (which will ship as soon as the weekend is over).

Yes, it was nice that the Vega got to take centre stage on this album (along with the Bechstein grand piano - another instrument that is featured a lot). I hadn't used it often before - mainly because it is so heavy - but in combination with the piano, it just fits so well, and now it is one of my favourite lap steels.

Re: the harmonium/pump organ - if one is at hand, it seems it ends up in my recordings, as I love that organic/dynamic sound. Smile A couple of years ago, I made this album with lap steel and harmonium as the only instruments.

Thanks again Bill, and have a good Sunday!

Fred
