I Just installed a new set of Planetwaves locking tuners on my SX lap steel.I would not recommend them as they have a feature that cuts the ene of the string off,but this feature which i thought was going to be great ,is not so great as it causes a lot of problems trying to get the strings through the holes especially the larger guages.I have been in touch with Daddario as i thought i had received a fault,but no.My string set is open G 58-16,i dropped down to 50 to se if the string would fit better,but no.So i MY OPINION if you want locking tuners pick a different style.

I have a Tele plus telecaster, Larrivee acoustic. Also have a Fender resonator guitar with new Quarterman cone and spider, and an Allan tailpiece .Playing through a Fender Super Champ XD, using a little delay on the amp and a Harmonix Holy Grail Echo pedal, set on Hall turned to about 1pm.Just Bought a Yamaha FGX5 Recently and love it. Recently got a Sho-NUFF 6 string pedal steel in open G.Still learning.Just bought back my old SX lap steel that i modified, in open G |

Sure you have the tuners completely unlocked?
They're used on quite a few Beard resonator guitars with no issues. Standard resonator guitar gauges. I've never had an issue with Beard installed tuners.

I'm guessing that on those Auto Trim tuners the little pin that locks the string in the post has a sharp edge that could be sanded down to make them normal locking tuners.
However, before you unscrew it, do google search to see if it's ok, I have seen warnings not to do do this with some lockers, tat they're really hard to reassemble if you do.

Itook the locking pin completely out and still fought to get the larger strings through.I have tried everything i can think off.They might have worked for some but not me.Yesterday i removed one tuner,took out the locking pin,tried to line up the hole for 56 guage,no luck,when you do get it lined up it has to be PERFECTLY on the money,even then its a battle.

.060 or .062 is where i've started to have problems getting the string into Gotoh, Hipshot or Sperzel lockers.
This is a common problem for 8 string guitars, they often use a .080 or similar gauge for low string. So either they unwind the wrap and lock only the core in the tuner or they drill out the tuner
