Hi
I am new to the forum and have read for several years and appreciate the information you all share freely to the uninformed so thank you all.

I want to restring my 1951 Fender Champ lap steel and play mostly in open D or G and need to branch out into a new country tuning. Any advice on a versatile string set to cover all the bases? If anyone cares I can try to post pictures but it is just a typical Fender Champ.
Thanks
Jim

You’ll need to make a decision as to the direction you want to go vis a vis high tunings or lower tunings.

If you’re interested in exploring C6 and related tunings where your lowest note will be Bb, then a a set of C6 strings will do.

If you want to explore tunings closer to where you are, then a set of strings for Open E will let you tune to various flavours of D, E, and G. Something like 14-58.

Tuning a set of E strings up to C6 will probably end with too much excitement (the bad kind).

Tuning a set of C6 strings down to open D won’t damage or break anything but will probably cause the lower strings to become too floppy to use.

And as always, you can order single strings to build your own sets using this guide,

One online source for single strings is JustStrings.com at https://www.juststrings.com/

Thank you. I also have a 1946 Fender Princeton I think it is called, no serial number stamped. I could dedicate that to the C6 as you suggest and use the Champ for G and D tuning variations.

If you or anyone has any particular favorite brand strings per tunings please let me know and I will use the recommended juststrings sight. I bought acoustic strings from then several years back, forgot about them.

Much appreciated.

Don't forget the forum store. Convenient sets which might fit the bill. Good service from B0B and supports the site.
