Pickup choice for Mullen Discovery

Post by Kevin Maki »

Anyone go with a BL705,or something other than the factory Mullen single coil pickup? Ordering a Discovery and looking for suggestions. Thanks

Hi Kevin, I just recently changed the single coil pickup in my Mullen Discovery to a BL 705. The single coil sounded great but I'm not a fan of hum. I haven't done a session or live gig with it since the change but playing in the music room, it still sounds great. I find the tone is closer to that of my G2 now, which also has BL 705's.

Thank you Dale. Being that the Discovery has a wooden neck I'd wondered if helps to brighten it up the sound a little ?

Don't know about the Discovery, but I swapped the Mullen single coil in my G2 SD12 for a BL712 and love it. Everyone said the BL712 was the brightest sounding humbucker out there and it sounds great. Also it was easy to wire in a coil tap so I have the even brighter single coil mode along with the humbucker ;-)

Get with Mike at Mullen. He can fill you in on what differences you can expect.

Of course, Every guitar can sound different but my Discovery was clean sounding with the single coil. Also, to my ears, it naturally has a more "open" sound in the midrange than my G2, if that makes sense. Now, with the BL 705, I find the Discovery still clean but more "balanced" in tone.

I ordered my lacquer, wood neck G2 with a 705, and it sounded great! I also have a 705 in my LDG, which also sounds great!

With the coil tap, it's single coil as well. I have the tap wired, but seldom ( if ever) use it. I bought the 705 after researching which humbucker sounded the most like a single coil, so the full setting suits me.

Thanks Paul..Someone told me a while back that they preferred the 710. Thought it had a little warmer sound.

Terry, did you have to lower the pickup from where the Mullen single coil was? Thanks!
