Just saw this active mod for the Ernie Ball VP jr. I happen to have an extra one that needs a new pot anyway, so I'm considering trying it. (the ready to install version).

Has anyone tried it, or have any thoughts? I've been using a VP jr for years now, and really like the size and treadle movement. I'm used to the front-facing jacks, too. Been wondering if a 500k pot, or something like this, will help open up the sound a bit, though.

Whaddya think?

I haven't tried this particular one, but I have put a buffer into a VP Jr. The result is similar to using a higher value pot - raising the impedance gives you more high-end (actually, it doesn't roll it off like lower impedance does, that's how the Match Box works.)

If you like the VP Jr ergonomics (I do too) this looks like a good product. The Hall effect device won't wear out, the taper is adjustable, you get a buffer with adjustable gain and it looks well designed.

Which mod/options are you thinking of getting?
There are several on the web site.
How much will it cost?

You need to weigh this against a new active pedal like a Hilton/Telonics/etc and decide if it's worth it.

I don't know what value of pot is in the EB now.
What is it?
If it is 250K or less, a 500K or 1 Meg pot will bring some of the high end back. (Assuming that your cables and the rest of your signal chain aren't causing problems as well.)
Not to mention a replacement pot being much cheaper than a VP mod or a new pedal.

The factory pot in the VP JR is 250k. 25k pot in the Active model, but those have "25k" on the face plate.

I would say go for it! For the entertainment value of having something different to play with for a while if nothing else......It should make quite a difference in the sound and certainly cheaper than one of the custom pedal steel active pedals.

I'm with Doug on this. Besides, I need a test pilot report so I can alter mine. Actually, I've had good results with a buffer in front of the VP Jr, so my thoughts are that it will improve your pedal. Only drawback is now you need a power supply at all times. I'm not cool with that. Your thoughts?

I have a VPJR with a Tom Bradshaw 470K pot in it and it's great.
