Can't say for sure, but he sorta reminds me of Bob Hempker.  But then again, I think Bob always wore glasses.

I Googled her, and she is from Texas. One of our Texas steel buddies must know who he is.

| She recorded with Willie Nelson several years ago. I believe it was on the 'Just One Love' album. I am not sure who the steel picker is...so many great pickers in Texas. |

Well Kimmie Rhodes has been an Austin Icon for many years starting back in late 80's.....but she hails from Lubbock and she has Joe Ely helping her with many musical endeavors then. When She did end up in Austin; she was hooked up with Willie and Jimmy Day played steel on her first projects. Her husband Joe Gracey was her
Bass/producer and big time radio personality for many years; but he passed from Cancer in 2011(RIP Joe.) I was on and off the road all over the place at that time this song aired on TV...so I missed it and I don't recognize the steel player for I never ran into him at that time 1990....but Herb Steiner if ANYONE would know; he would.
But Kimmie had many many musicians in and out of her recording and musical career; hard to pick anyone out unless you've done something with them musically.

Jimmy Day played on the studio recording of this tune, which was apparently recorded in 1985 but released somewhat later. It looks like David Zettner was credited with bass and backup vocals. And I'm guessing that's Dave in this clip - he definitely played steel, and with Kimmie sometimes.
Whoever it is - I think the singing and playing is spot on in all respects. There's great chemistry in the vocals in particular. One of you Texas guys must know for sure who this is.  |

| I don't know who the steel player is either, but it's nice to see and hear Kimmie. I heard her a bit back in Denton, Tx. ca. 1980. Lots of good musicians in Denton back then. |

| Thank you to everyone who replied. My original post only asked the question, "Who was the steel player?" But I asked the question because I was also so impressed with the steel playing and singing. I googled David Zettner and found that he died in 2006 at the age of 61, possibly from an aneurysm. He was credited with playing bass for Willie Nelson for some time. I found one mention of him playing steel on this exact video that I linked to, which seems to validate that he is the steel player we are writing about. I wish I had run across him back in the day. |

Well, If nobody else is going to say it I will, Beautiful Girl with lots of country heart and soul. Pure country music. I love it. I do not know if that is David Zettner or not but I have seen him in the years gone by and remember he play my kind of steel and music. Plus he is playing a Sho-Bud thru what I think now is a Standell. Pairs up good of course. Good Music. J.R.

| Tommy Hannum does it great - he's a good lead singer and writes great songs. He plays Monday nights (or did....) at Robert's Western World in Nashville w/ the fabulous John England & the Western Swingers. Hell of a steel player. |
