Topic: Mystery serial number on a bolton... help. |

I'm purchasing a 196? Emmons D10 4X8 bolton from a fine gentleman in North Carolina. But I don't understand the serial number. It's 2605 no "D." That doesn't fit with any serial number chart I've seen. Anyone here can help me I'd really appreciate it Some Photos:

| i owned serial number 2052 with no letter D. mine was not a bolt on. i tried to find out info on it, but everyone said it was a mis print etc etc. you know how it is there are a lot of experts out there...nice guitar....thanks jack |

If it's an original bolt-on the serial number is the invoice number. The sequential numbering with the "D" started in '67.

I added the guitar to my unofficial serial number/owner list, Tom. I believe your guitar to be an early-to-mid 1967 axe. Great vintage, I have a couple S-10s of that era.

Yes, I talked to Senor "El Mysterioso" and he filled me in on the guitar pointing out what was and what was not original. I purchased two Boltons today. Whoopie...

If the guitar went back to the factory for any reason... adding knee levers, changing the setup, etc.... Emmons would replace the decal with the newer style badge.

Wish it still had the decal but now there are holes in the Formica and they don't make that wood pattern any longer. I heard there are only two brown bellies in existence.

Hey Tom; Dickey here.
My '66 bolt on didn't have a "D".
I wish I never sold it, but I got a VERY generous offer for it, & had 2 other steels,so...
That Wideglide in your avatar looks great...Those Street Slammers look awesome..always DID like that bike of yours!

Respectfully disagree. Out of 5 purchased new between late 65 and 68. By various owners in my area. All were returned to Emmons for added knee levers around 1970. They were returned with the original decals. I do remember Ron asking dad if he wanted the new style badge. Dad ask Ron what he would do. Ron said he'd keep it original. So he did.

| This is certainly secondhand information on my part, however it comes from close friends of mine who were Emmons dealers from the time period and were regularly at the factory and knew Ron personally(as in took fishing trips together). Much like Fender or any of the other manufacturers of the day, almost anything could make it out the door depending on who it was for, or even who was doing the work. Sometimes spare parts were being used up, or just something different being tried. While it’s definitely cool to find something unique on a guitar that may even be original, it doesn’t necessarily date it, or make it special from a technical standpoint(although it is way cooler)! |

I sold this '67 D-10 brown belly bolt-on to Bill Price a few years ago. He may be a mutual friend of ours and the one you've referenced above.
