Replacing changer in GFI

I have acquired a 30 year old GFI student model guitar. It actually plays well, but the pedals and changer are stiff by nature of how it does it's changes. I'm wondering if it would be possible to put a different changer in it? I'm think a single raise and single lower would be appropriate, but would it fit? The current changer is attached from the top and most others I've seen are more hidden in their attachment style. I have a great Mullen guitar as well, but always looking for something lighter, as I play guitar, and fiddle too. I don't want to be loading up after the drummer leaves. Ha!

That should be a pull release changer, it shouldn’t be stiff by nature. Many are improperly setup, causing this problem though. Replacing the changer would most likely affect the tone negatively as well, as the pull release almost always sounds better the all pull models.

Seems like lots of work and expense for a very uncertain return.
