I'm not using this copedent, but it seems to solve the low notes problem without much fuss. The low 2 strings are set up like a U-12, and the X lever provides the low E note to match a 6-string guitar's range.

Been doing that for a looong time, only in the key of E tuning. My RKR drops the 8th string E to D# (with a half-stop) on the way to D.

All the recent discussion on D tunings makes me wish I'd started playing a little later than I did. The idea of lowering E9 to D9 and raising C6 to D6 to create a universal tuning is obvious (once it's pointed out) and neither shift is excessive.

As it is, I'm too far down the B6/E9 road to mash my brain trying to turn back Smile

In 2010, I went from a D-12 E9th & C6th (talk about rabbit holes!) to an S-8 D6th. Eventually got to an S-10. Some muscle memory needed to be undone, but it really wasn't too hard. The thrill of finding everything I needed on a much smaller system outweighed the inconvenience.

Here's a blog post about a copedent I'm toying with now. Another rabbit hole!! Laughing I know it's strange but it works for me. https://b0b.com/wp/2020/09/extending-d9th-range-to-low-e/

Back to the U-12 inspired D9th, there are a few things I really like about it:
  • The traditional A6th with strings 4 & 8 lowered (RKL) is also F#m7 with the 10th string bass note.
  • The pedals down major chord includes the low root note G on the 10th string.
  • The E9th chord scale on LKV has a low root note E on the 10th string.
  • The A+F positions have a low 5th on the 10th string.
Things I use a lot that are missing:
  • The E9th 9th string lowered to get a 4-note minor 7th chord on strings 9, 8, 6, 5.
  • Gmaj7 with G on string 10 and F# on string 6
Those positions don't matter much in country, but I'm used having them there.

So b0b, you swapped to D before I'd even started playing!

I would need to figure out the jazz chords I need, the equivalent of raising and lowering string 4 a half step on the C6. Maybe instead of the centre cluster I use now, I might experiment with in/out double levers.

It's all time - wouldn't it be better spent knuckling down to what I have already? Should I hire a life coach?

Personally I don't see how all you E9 players can do without a root in the bass?
Your's truly,
U12 player who also has the 5 in the bass.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one with copedent envy Laughing

Seems every new idea that comes across is an argument between 2 voices in my head. One that says, it could be much better than what I'm playing and would only take a couple hours to setup and the other saying I'm making great progress with what I have and need to stick with it. Luckily it's the 2nd voice that's been winning the past 3 years Winking
