I have a Derby SD-10 that I traded for and was not told of this problem. If you tap the guitar or the pickup you can hear it thru the amp and you have to play it with a lot of gain and with that comes a lot of hisses. Can anyone help to figure if it could be a bad pickup or something different, I am not an electrical guy and any help would greatly be appreciated? |

From your description, the pickup is bad.
It is "microphonic" and apparently shorted if you have low output. |

If the sound is tinny and thin, and the output is very low with noise (hum or hiss), that would indicate an open pickup. In rare cases, depending on the pickup design, it could also be wired wrong. (I'd find someone that could ohm out the pickup for you before going out and getting a new one.) |
