74 Rod and Barrel... Ok so everything is pretty stable, but the weirdest thing started... tune the C pedal and B-C# doesn't come back the same after exercising the pedal. Ok so go to tune the raise again (and again) ok something is hanging up. Raise the return spring tension, no help... then I notice a lot of sideplay when tuning lateral motion of the wrench changes the pitch a ton. Only really happens on this raise. Really odd. The others don't really move sideways.
The way the rods are laid out the B pedal rod runs through the C Pedal cage (not sure that's the right term). I don't see any friction or rubbing. But what's odd is that if I'm tuning BC down and rock off the B the B to C# snaps right in and it's the real tuning i had set. Hard to explain.
Tune the B to C# with BC down ... perfect... lift the pedals and put them down again B to C# note is off a bit sharp. OK rock off the B pedal and leave the C down, and the note snaps to exactly what I had tuned.
Any thoughts? I have this thing pretty well dialed and figured out (Thanks Ricky) but this is a weirdo. _________________ I'll know I'm playing good when the dog stops howling. |

A photo would be good. Do you have a little slack on those pull rods with no pedal engaged? If not it's most likely just an over-tuning issue. Read the sticky at the top of this forum section for an explanation and solutions.
You said "C Pedal cage", does this mean "rack" (as opposed to two-hole bell cranks)? If racks, do you have them set with the open side of the "U" facing the changer, or facing the key head end (this is how they should be)? Side to side movement of the rack might indicated a bent or mis-routed pull rod. It's possible that the issue is the little protruding spring nub in the barrel hanging up on the rack, which could cause the pull to go slightly sharp intermittently if that barrel is cranked in pretty far and the spring can't move. This would be more likely if the open side of the rack was facing toward the changer |

There's slack on all the barrels. The racks have the flat side (where the barrel contacts) facing the key head. This steel was rebuilt by a pro, and I doubt that could be backwards. It's not over-tuned. The rack is not moving side to side. The side play is at the actual rod end behind the changer. With the tuning wrench on the B string and either A or C depressed the wrench pulls in as expected. But it's really easy to move the wrench laterally and it goes sharp when pushed sideways. That's something the other strings don't do. Also it doesn't return to where it's tuned. That could be the pin contact, I'll check to see of that's messy.
Everything you've described is at the barrel end of the rod. This sideplay issue is happening at the changer end. _________________ I'll know I'm playing good when the dog stops howling. |
