In addition to the Z Series pickups I am producing ( https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=358735 ) , I am adding a classic style single coil model similar to the Emmons or Truetone pickup that most steel players are familiar with with the 1/4 inch magnets. I am also making this pickup with the ShoBud narrow mount pattern and the top and bottom plates the same size, see rendering below.
Many people prefer this type of pickup, and with the passing of Jerry Wallace and Truetone, they have not been readily available.

I am calling these pickups the CE and CS series (Classic Emmons, Classic ShoBud), and it features the same basic design as the Emmons or Truetone with ¼ inch diameter alnico magnets wound with 42 gauge wire. The pickup body is 0.78 inch tall, and it’s a standard wide mount or narrow mount baseplate.

I have made a few design improvements over the typical way these have been made in the past, specifically:

-The bobbin is 3D printed as one piece and does not rely on glue for structural integrity
-The outer coil wire is clamped securely to prevent stress on the coil
-The coil is wax potted to eliminate microphonics

I can wind the CE or CS pickups to any desired resistance, and since the design is similar to Emmons or Truetone, a CE10 pickup wound to say 18 K-ohms will measure and sound the same as an Emmons or Truetone at 18 K-ohms.

Also, these will have the same hum/noise performance as an Emmons or Truetone pickup, this is intrinsic to the design.

I am currently offering the following standard models of CE and CS Series pickups:

-10 String Wide Mount, 77 mm (3.04 in) overall center to center polepiece spacing, for majority of brands that use 11/32 inches spacing at the changer
spacing

-12 String Wide Mount, 94 mm (3.70 in) overall center to center polepiece spacing, for majority of brands that use 11/32 inches spacing at the changer

-10 String Narrow Mount, 77 mm (3.04 in) overall center to center polepiece spacing, for majority of brands that use 11/32 inches spacing at the changer
spacing

-12 String Narrow Mount, 94 mm (3.70 in) overall center to center polepiece spacing, for majority of brands that use 11/32 inches spacing at the changer

10 String Pickups are $125 each plus shipping

12 String Pickups are $135 each plus shipping

Payment to be made via Paypal invoice, email me at scott_swartz@hotmail.com or through the forum email or PM with what you like to order and shipping address, and I will get a Paypal invoice out to you.

Expected lead time is 6 weeks from receipt of payment, I will strive to get them out quicker but there is some lead time variability at my 3D printing vendor. I can also be reached at 3 one 4 2 six 7 4 six 2 1 for questions.

Good job Scott. I had long ago considered that machining a one piece bobbin from Delrin, nylon, something of that nature would take a lot of the misery out of manufacturing pickups. The lipstick tube pickups had some kind of funky little light plastic bobbin that was a tight fit to the magnet. I bet the 3D printing works well.

Hi Scott,
As a long time Truetone user, and the sad passing of Jerry, I applaud your efforts of keeping this design alive.....I look forward to hearing some reviews on this pickup...Thanks again !!.......Sincerely, Jim

Bob, narrow mount will follow shortly, thats part of the reason why the name is CE (Classic Emmons), there will be a CS (Classic ShoBud) series as well.

The next hard to find pickup (and very desirable, but a humbucker) is the 705, I only found a few for sale (Gary Sill, Jim Palenscar) because Pitbull's out of stock (that could be just temporary tho).

I may be a customer a little later. I used to have an Emmons SD-12 pp with the original single coil. I changed it out for a Jerry Wallace, then later sold the guitar along with both pickups.

I just bought a 1975 Emmons SD-10 yesterday. It has a George L E-66 pickup on it. I've always preferred single coils. So I'll see how the E-66 works out before deciding whether to try a single coil. I'm just glad to know you are filling the void and making these pickups available.

This is great news! Jerry sadly did indeed leave a void. Sad

I just received a pair of Z-10 narrow-mount pickups from Scott. I have yet to put them in a Pro II that I'm working on, but they sure look awesome. And he is a great guy to do biz with. His attention to detail is commendable.
