Your open tuning borrows from the U12 E9/B6 concept. Looks like Emaj9 to me.

You’ve been playing a long time, so a rookie’s opinion probably doesn’t carry much weight, but I don’t know what I would do without the open D on string 9. I use it with too many other pedal and lever combinations for sounds that I would have to learn how to get all over again if it wasn’t there. That’s why I shied away from U12 when I upgraded from S10.

I use my B to D lever on my Universal allot so I don't need an open D. Furthermore, I think if I had an open D it would get in the way.

I have heard many Uní players say the same thing. I guess the B and D together (or sequentially without bending) is considered undesirable for some reason, or is made up somewhere else in the low register?

Carl, my dear old pal, so great to see you posting about your always interesting ideas for PSG!

Without a whole lot of analysis of possible note configurations and how to get them ergonomically, I'd say that you're asking s.9 to produce five different notes and s.8 four different notes. That would make for quite a complex undercarriage setup. These changes would have to be accomplished at the crossbar and/or bellcranks, would they not? So explain to my simple Texas brain how you accomplish this tuning vis a vis the undercarriage.

Again, great seeing you post here. I'm not here that often myself any more.

What Carl is showing us is like the lower half of a B6/E9 uni without the bottom two strings. Yes, Herb, those 8th and 9th strings are busy but if you have enough changes it's no problem; it's easy on the Excel, and I have the same on my Williams although it requires a bit of thought.

Dyed-in-the-wool E9 players have many uses for the D string, including using it as the root of a D6/Dmaj7, but if like me you went universal before acquiring that habit you don't miss it.

Carl has been a decades-long devotee of the Excel guitar, for sure.

Mr. Dixon, your wisdom is greatly appreciated by this tinhorn! My “upgrade” was from E9 S10 to E9 S12, so I am just beginning to understand the low G#-B advantage and the huge sound of those full bottom E and A chords, as well as lower register minor mode ideas.

Historically, that D string dates back to a non-pedal tuning with an F# above it and no E. And even when pedals came along, it was one change per string maximum.

This instrument has come a long way in a short time, that's for sure Smile

Great idea to extend the capabilities of the 10 string E9th tuning. I play a U-12 and your 10 string tuning is exactly what I would do if I played a 10. I too love the low G#, especially when using it as a harmony note up and down the neck when playing chord leads (G# to F# and G# to A pedals). I have my 2nd string tuned open to C# and prefer to raise it to D and D#. The open C# combines well as a 9th with the B6th tuning.
