Ron,
The Band-in-a-Box program is updated annually. That means you can sometimes find an older edition for sale at a tremendous discount. Once you have the program you are eligible to upgrade. I would search online music stores and Ebay.
My wife bought a (new old stock) two year old edition through Guitar Center for about half the going rate and presented it to me for a Christmas gift one year.
PG Music typically releases the new Windows edition around December 01 each year and the new Mac edition around June 01. New purchases and upgrades are typically discounted 40 - 50 percent during the month of a new release.
One big got cha' for a first time buyer is what package to get. There are four packages, ProPAK, MegaPAK, UltraPAK and Audiophile. Each package includes the same programs but differ in the amount of audio content.
Both the UltraPAK and Audiophile packages include all the package content. The Audiophile includes duplicate wav (uncompressed) and wma (compressed) content while the UltraPAK has wma content only. The UltraPAK and Audiophile packages have more than 3,100 hours of audio.
The MegaPAK has 550 hours of audio.
The ProPAK has 340 hours of audio.
The number one complaint in the PG Music forums by new users that purchase the ProPAK or MegaPAK is why is so much content marked N/A or not available.
Here is a link that describes the various Windows packages: https://www.pgmusic.com/bbwin.packages.htm
