'Found this while looking for something else! I don't know how or why I have this cut of Jerry Byrd live from 1939 but it must be one of his earliest recordings. A lot of the classic JB sound is already in place.

At about a minute in you hear that slid-into 9th chord...clearly quoting Paradise Isle! The classic story many times told was how he sat through multiple showings of the movie just to hear what the player was doing on the intro music, and then ran all the way home to try it out on his guitar, once he had figured it out...great find.

This is vintage Jerry Byrd for me with playing the Hawaiian guitar without the use of a volume foot control. It is more in the style of classic Hawaiian Steel Guitar playing for me.
When Jerry started to use his volume foot control later to achieve his mastery of touch and tone, I found it interesting and engaging, but there was something missing when he played Hawaiian music. |
