Can someone explain why Jerry lists this chord as an F# minor 9th? It has an F major triad.

Also, in the previous page he’s writing about it as a F#9. I think there’s something small that I’m missing.

Thanks!

Let's see...in F# that would be...

1-3-b7-9-5-b7

Unless its a typo and he meant A natural? No, pulled out the book and in context, definitely a A#.

Note that he groups it as an adaptation of the C# Minor tunings, as being a related tuning. Preivous page he just calls it F# 9th, and in the arrangement (May Day is Lei Day) it shows F#M-9th. It is a dominant 9th chord, so minor or major wouldn't be a correct nomenclature for the tuning (just a F# ninth). Full strums in the tab correspond to dominant 7th and 9th chords, so I think its correctly shown, but yeah, have no idea why he called it F# minor 9th, unless it was an accidental carryover from the C# minor tunings he derived it from?

Just yr regular F#9

Could be a typo. Could be a mistake. For a busy pro like JB, gigging, traveling, and writing, it would be easy to miss the occasional chord name. Especially if he didn’t have someone well versed in music theory doing his proofreading.

Man! If I could play like him, I’d ask to be forgiven a typo or misnaming every now and then.

May I ask which JB book we are talking about? I bought his course years ago from Scotty's, and thrre was no mention of this tuning or tab for May Day is Lei Day.

It is his course, from Scotty's...how many years ago did you buy yours? Mine was probably circa 2017...

Edit: its on page 88, of mine.

Thanks - my book is from Scotty’s as well. I likely bought it in 2017.

Nic - I think you are right in that it’s the tuning that follows, and is related to C#m7.

Regardless, I’m having fun with F#9.

Thanks, Nick. I think I must have bought it in the 1990s.
