Hi folks, I have put together a pedal board for steel using a Voodoo Lab Pedal Power unit for most of my effects. But my Strymon Lex needs ore power so I've using a Truetone wal wart to power it. The problem is that it creates a lot of hum. Are the two units creating a ground issue because of a mismatch? Suggestions?

I have had issues mixing the Truetone One Spot switching adapters and isolated power supplies (ala the Pedal Power) as well. To troubleshoot it you could try a linear regulated 9 VDC wall wart for the Lex, linear meaning there is a 120VAC to 12 or so VAC transformer inside providing ground isolation as you get on each output of a Pedal Power. These will be physically much larger than a One Spot. Note also there is only one transformer in a Pedal Power but there are multiple secondary windings all isolated from each other.
I run 2 strymons, a Boss RT20 Rotary, and an EH B9 and Mel9, and several other low draw pedals all off a Truetone SC12 power supply, it has worked flawlessly. Voodoo Labs also has Pedal Power models with high current outputs. _________________ Scott Swartz

The One-Spot is good, but not for every pedal, particularly digital ones. Strymon makes good isolated power supplies. Pricey, but will run about anything. https://www.strymon.net/power/
Joyo makes a cheaper one that does pretty well and is a storage battery that will last more than one gig. You don’t have to plug in and worry about ground loops with that. https://www.joyoaudio.com/product/94.html
I use both. _________________ KEVIN MAUL: Airline, Beard, Clinesmith, Danelectro, Evans, Fender, GFI, Gibson, Hilton, Ibanez, Justice, K+K, Live Strings, MOYO, National, Oahu, Peterson, Quilter, Rickenbacher, Sho~Bud, Supro, TC, Ultimate, VHT, Williams, X-otic, Yamaha, ZKing. |

Jim..Have three Strymon pedals and all came complete with factory furnished power supplies. In my experience, any attempt to power them using a 'One Spot' (or any other unit) resulted in the pedal emitting an annoying ringing sound (similar to a old bicycle bell) and the light blinking consistently. |

Back to the O.P.:
"......using a Voodoo Lab Pedal Power unit for most of my effects."
Which version of Pedal Power are you using?
There are/have been several.
"But my Strymon Lex needs ore power so I've using a Truetone wal wart to power it."
I assume that you mean "more" power.
The Strymon web site and data sheet says it needs 250 ma 9 VDC.
Just as a quick test I agree with one of the other posters.
Try another 9 VDC wall wart. Current should be 250 ma minimum per Strymon.
It doesn't need to be a fancy one.
I have heard a few bad comments here and there about the One Spot adapters and their variants over the years.
It appears that maybe you've hit on one of the "magic combinations" that do not want to play well together.
There's probably an easy fix in here somewhere. |

Every time I have had a hum, my Electro Harmonix Hum De Bugger has solved the problem. Your problem may be too involved for a simple fix.
It might be worth a shot. You can return it if it doesnt work. It is small and lightweight so shipping cost is not a big issue. |
