Good pedal steel from Walter Haynes, but that fiddle kickoff from Shorty L. became a signature for the song from then on. Too bad he doesn't get the credit for some of the great intros and turnarounds he created for Price, Tillis, etc.

Tillis used James Baker on steel when he cut his original version of "Heart Over Mind" This version sounds like the original version to my ears...He recorded it several times over the years...I am even on the live cut in the late 70's.

To my ear, that's ol' Jim "Duh-HUH" Baker. I worked WITH Jim a lot, and FOR Walter over the years. Pretty sure that's Jim.

Tillis said it was Jim Baker...Jim was an early studio player who mostly played the custom sessions...This was cut as a demo and sold to the label...Jim Baker played most of Mel's song writing demos back in those days.

Jim Baker had a 45 out with 'Here's Billy',
which Billy Parker used as his theme song,
and 'Moon Walkin' on the flip side.
He also had a Steel Guitar Christmas album
out, along in the early '70's.

Sure is fun music to play! Other than those pointed James Leddy boots and string ties choking you half to death

Hey Russ,

Can you post or send me any info you have on that Jim Baker 45? I'm unaware of it.

Thanks,
Joe
