Thanks, Steve. I thought it might be. I had never heard this; love the period and sound of this session.

I do too,Dean!I always miss those two little strings on the outside,though...that's a big part of the sound for me...you can't deny Emmons and Day during this time,though...they were literally inventing what we do!

I don't know if it's correct or not, but Praguefrank's discography argues it's probably Frank Juricek on this and some other sessions around this period in 1956:
late July or early August 1956 Gold Star Recording Studio, 5628 Brock St., Houston, TX - George Jones (George Jones [vcl/gt], prob. Glenn Barber [gt], Hal Harris [gt], Frank Juricek [steel], Tiny Smith [bass], Earl Caruthers or Ernie Hunter [fiddle], Doc Lewis [piano]. Producer: Pappy Daily)

First session he lists with Jimmy Day is Dececember 1956. Prior discussion on some of George's tunes from that period didn't resolve the question of who was the steel player, except that it wasn't Lloyd -

I love the early Starday/Mercury Jones period too. Raw and heartfelt.

We recorded the song on Craig Dillingham 15-20 years ago and used this version as a"work tape"...CD was a good friend of Day's and told us that Jimmy told him that he had played on the"original",whatever that means...???

.
This is the '56 version. It's clearly older than the OP version and not Jimmy Day so I guess this would be Frank Juricek.

That makes sense. I also thought there were only two versions, but thought they were '56 and '96, here's the '96 version:

So there are at least 3 versions.

The '96 version was done for the soundtrack of the 1996 Kevin Costner movie "Tin Cup".
