Topic: Sho bud and Emmons original prices 60's + 70"s? |

I'm just curious about the cost of Steel guitars back in the day. I'd like to see how they compared to each other. I just saw a Miller Custom broshure from the late 60's or early 70's (I think) and it shows D-10's with 7+1 staring at $1300 and singles with 4 +1 starting at $740. That seems like a lot when you adjust that money for inflation. How much was a D-10 Professional brand new?

In the late 60s & early 70s a D-10 Sho-Bud
Baldwin model sold for about $1,300.

I have a Sho~Bud store catalog from 1978 and the list prices are:
Super Pro was, $2895. (8x6)
Pro 1 $1450. (3x2)
Pro 11 $1999 (D-10 8x2)
Pro 111 $2395 (D-10 8x4)
And the lowly Maverick was. $795.
Also featured LDG $1995
And S-12 $1950 (3x4)

My Emmons Catalog No. 734 says:
8 pedals, mica finish D-10, list price $1495.00, Volume pedal $60.00, case $90.00, knee lever or extra pedal add $89.50, lacquer finish add $75.00, wood neck inserts add $20.00 per neck. The Loafer 10 string, 3 pedal 4 knee levers, $1295.00. An interesting note,"Highly polished glass mica finishes are not recommended since they show off scratches. Satin or textured finishes are more beautiful and lasting." |

A 1972 Sho-Bud catalog lists prices as:
D10 Professional w/8p 2kl.... $1450.
S10 w/3p 1kl ....$695.

Bought a brand new Pro III at Manny`s Music in `78 and paid something like 1100 for it. Visited The Sho-Bud shop on Broadway on the same trip and used Buds there had higher prices.

I bought my old ShoBud S-12 with 3 & 4 near the end of '77 and the price at that time was $1299 or so. I did get one helluva deal though, I was working part time at Nash's Music in Inglewood, Ca. and he was taking $20 a week towards the price of the steel. After just a few weeks I went to work one day and the store was empty. No one ever heard of the guy (Kenny Nash) anymore so I got the ShoBud for under a hundred bucks. I wish I could find another one for that price..........JH in Va.

My Emmons Dbl-10 with 8+4 with enamel finish
volume pedal and case cost me $1,250 in about 1972; factory direct.
Jeff Newman expressed disbelief at that time as he stated they were selling for $2450.

Thank you to everyone for the information.
I found a website:

It adjusts prices so that you can see what $1450 in 1972 would cost today.
From Skip Edwards' post of the 1972 sho bud catolog it says a D-10 8p 2k was $1450. Adjusted = $6613
S10 3p 1k for $695 = $3169
S-12 from 77' at $1299 now is $4215
I think it shows how important steel guitar was at that time if so many people paid the equivalent of $6600 for a D-10 shobud. (I know that was list price but still...) I guess that isn't a whole lot more than some of the new guitars but I bet they sold a lot more back then. I was personaly surprised to see how my s-10 miller listed for close to the same price as a shobud....they haven't ended up at the same price. |

| In 1972 my father bought a brand new Emmons D-10 at Washington music for $1295.00. Then sold his 65 or 66 white wrap around for $300.00. Wish I could find that one now. |
