| Hi There, I've had this Sho Bud 3x5 for about 9 years but I just realised after checking out the forum I know very little about it ! I was told it's a PRO 1. If anybody has any idea of the model, year, originality, possible value I'd really be grateful. It plays and sounds killer. Thanks very much. It's a little earlier than the Pro1.
It looks to me to be an early '70's 6139, also known as a single neck Professional, but it's had some serious work done to the undercarriage. I'll bet it started out life with a rack and barrel mechanism. It sort of looks like the job that Duane Marrs does to these old Buds, with teardrop levers, instead of the straight ones that he usually uses. The rod pullers look like his, as well as the anti cabinet-drop metal strip on the inside of the front apron. I don't believe Sho-Bud ever blacked the underside like this one has had done to it.
It's got rope inlay and a round-front, and it looks like the coil tap switch, tone & vol pots have been removed from the rear shelf. Around '74 they switched to square-front and diamond inlay after the introduction of the Pro1/new 6139 models, as well as discontinuing the tap switch, tone & vol pots. The pickup has the metal posts at the edges, and I think that came in around '74, but that pickup could've been installed any time.
I'm curious what that black dealie is between the changer and the input jack...
I've got one just like it that I bought new in '72, and it's still all original. Well... 99% original.

| Hi Skip, Thanks for the reply - very helpful.I forgot to mention in the original post that the # 2646 is stamped into the aluminium end and in another place 1-A-2. I'm not sure what the black thing is but it's connected to the input jack and the switch on the side. Do you know what the switch is ? it's changes the sound. Thanks again. Tim |

Tim, it sounds like it's a coil-tap switch. One way should sound more full, and the other should be a little thinner.
The serial # on my '72 is #2752, but Sho-Bud's serial numbering system was squirrely at best.
I'd trust Bobbe's assessment that it's an Ed Naylor job under the hood. |
