Tom, I field tested the starter back in 1999 or so. I don’t think I would’ve had any problems taking it on a job. I tested in several retailers music stores and played it for 1 set at a benefit. It sounded pretty good as I recall. I mean for entry level rig it wasn’t bad at all. It had its limitations but nothing you couldn’t cope with with a little tlc and coaxing.

My first steel, was a Carter Starter. I had a small keyboard bag I could carry it around in and took it to a bunch of open mic jams. It was really light and convenient for that. I'm not sure I would use one for regular paying gigs though. I do wish I had kept it as I would frequent open mics and jams a lot more due to its portability. It did sound good.

No experience of these, but as a general principle a beginning instrument must sound good above all else, otherwise there's no satisfaction and no incentive to progress.

I have been gigging and jamming with my starter for 10 years. Changing the pup to a George L really improved the sound and immunity to hum in what had been some noisy venues.
