ISO: Tuning Nuts - Are PSG tuning nuts suddenly extinct?

Hi all,

I'm working on getting a Carter Starter I just bought (don't shun me) setup properly (it was a custom copedent that seems backwards and upside down from the Emmons style) and having some great success actually. Only now it's clear I'm missing some rods and tuning nuts.

I got the rods taken care of at McMaster-Carr (3/32 stainless 303) thanks to some earlier posts and to the fact that I work at an aviation business where they order from there a lot!

I can't find any tuning nuts though... they're suddenly out of stock on Amazon and Reverb and "unavailable" at psgparts.com.

Are we having a tuning-nutocalypse? Any suggestions?

I've looked at standoffs on Amazon and McMaster-Carr but it seems none of the the plastic ones are long enough.

Any links/suggestions appreciated!

The tuning nuts take spells they are harder to find than Hens Teeth.
One thing to remember when ordering Plastic Tuning Nuts, there is 3 different sizes of the hole in them. For 3/32", 7/64" and 1/8" pull rods. Be sure to specify rod size along with length when ordering.

During the last shortage of tuning nuts Billy Cooper Steel guitar in Virginia was custom making them out of plastic 3/16" hex stock. He may have them in stock also.
Good Luck on your nut hunt and Happy Steelin.

Try Williams. See their store page. I've bought 3/32 nuts from them before. It's what they use.

Sorry guys, I'm sitting on 180ft of 3/16" hex nylon but just have not had the time to run it. between my lathe being down and builders orders I'm just waaaaay behind on a lot of stuff. That also includes wrenches...

If you are desperate you can some hex 2.5 nylon circuits stand off spacers, they come in different lengths ,I get them off eBay .

Hey all thanks for your input. I imagine I will try all of these by the time I'm done.

I bought the ones on eBay from weverette and they did not fit mine properly but not his fault. He was helpful in trying to find a work around.

The closest thing I have found is 3/16" hex standoffs from McMaster-Carr. The trouble is I bought the 1 1/2" ones and they are only threaded at each end about 1/4". The nuts started to twist when trying to thread past that, they aren't very thick or hard.

My next attempt is going to be some of the shorter ones that are pre-threaded 4-40 all the way through.

Contact Jeff at Show Pro Guitars. He has a ton of that size....3/32" x 1-1/2" which is what was used on the Starter. Also Bill Rudolph has many of the same size at Williams Guitars.

Also consider using shorter hex nuts and adding nylon spacers to make up the difference in length.
