I had originally thought it may be Freddie Tavares. But according to Fender: The Sound Heard 'Round The World by Richard Smith, Mr. Tavares didn't permantently relocate to southern California until the early '50s. Since Hawaiian War Chant was recorded on February 11, 1946, that supposition seems doubtful. Perhaps it was Dick Morgan, who played banjo and guitar for the City Slickers from 1944 to 1953, when he passed from a fatal heart attack at the ripe old age of 48. The basic Aloha 'Oe turnaround was not so difficult as to be out of the reach of anyone with rudimentary skills on the steel guitar, especially in 1946. The answer probably lies in the RCA studio logs and/or deep in the archives of Local 47.

In any event, I can't listen to that record without cracking a smile. Which ain't such a bad thing, these days.
