I have a CTS speaker that sounds fantastic in my Deluxe Reverb Reissue. I bought a matching one on Ebay, but it's shot--sounds like a rusty old tin can (i.e., very little volume, all high frequency; the kind of sound you would use to punish someone for particularly bad behavior.)

I don't know what sort of damage such a tonal quality points to. The speaker does not make a distorted sound, just a thin, weak one. Assuming I can diagnose what is wrong with it, I would probably try to fix it myself. An old CTS speaker would undoubtedly cost more to fix than it is worth, and I am not confident that it would sound as good as the one I like so much, even if fixed, so I don't want to sink too much time and money into it. All of which makes it the perfect opportunity to gain some hands-on speaker repair experience.
