Hi, I’m new to the forum and I’m interested in learning to play pedal steel. I’ve been playing guitar for twenty years and I’m ready for something new. I’m looking at the mullen discovery but i want to hear all of the pros and cons. I don’t want to start on something that won’t carry me for a while because at some point it will be used for gigging. Any info that anyone has I’d be glad to see it! Thanks! |

I would go with a Sd 10 mullen for me a sd10 is so much more comfortable to play an certainly out shines a s10 steel. If you take your time here on the forum you can buy a nice pre owned Mullen pre Rp or a Rp for less money than a new Discovery.
Mullen dose make a very good steel. But in the $2500 dollar price range there’s lots of preowned name brand sd10s for sale here on the forum!
Just food for thought. |

Thats a good steel to start on no question.. however I think if i were in your shoes [ i was, decades ago], I would save the extra $1,000 or so and buy a lightly used S10 steel from any number of builders. thats just me.. some guys want new, but most clean, well cared for used steels look as clean as new and play as new.. _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

Thanks guys, Johnie king, I’ve looked through the guitars you have for sale and I’ll be keeping an eye out for something that will work for me and my budget. Cowboy Eddie Long is a dear friend of mine and we’ve talked a lot about me getting started. He told me to start with something good so I’m not necessarily set on a mullen but a new one with the bells and whistles is in my price range. I’d definitely go for anything else with the Emmons copedent or maybe something that also has Franklin pedal and an upright knee. If you come across something please let me know. |

Here is a Desert Rose brand that is sometimes over looked a very reasonably priced steel brand new.
Your lucky to have Cowboy Eddie long for a friend he is one of the nicest person I’ve ever met.
I picked up a fourteen string BMI steel from Eddie last March an took it too Don the builder of BMI steels to put Eddies tuning on it for Eddie.

That mustve been the Julian tharpe steel he was telling me about. I would love to have a guitar with his tuning but with his schedule I feel like I could get more out of an Emmons set up with all of the information that’s out there. (i.e. the Paul Franklin method/ YouTube) He’s mentioned helping me get one of his set ups from BMI but I’m still kindve on the fence. I do like the idea of having everything in one place. |

Ben you could do a 12 string Extended E 9th tuning set up with Emmons tuning. My son
Zane King is a 12 string player he gets pretty creative with 12 strings. |

I am three years in to my psg journey. At the suggestion of a local player I purchased a new Mullen Discovery. It sounds great and in three years and over 1000 hours of playing time, has been perfectly reliable. I have zero regrets. _________________ Keep on truckin' |

I also have a sd10 and a d10 I'm not much on c6 but it's their I see no difference in playing a s10 to sd10 to d10 in some ways I prefer the s10 because my wrist in laying down the pad or the c6 neck just me I guess but I don't like my wrist dragging |

I picked up my new Mullen Discovery on Oct. 7, 2019 at the shop and love it....plays great and so easy to transport and setup. I did replace the stock pickup with a 705 because of hum issues, bad power in our house and main venue. Love the guitar and Mike, John and Jeannette are great to work with. I named it "Della", bet you can guess why LOL _________________ Beard E-model, Martin D-28 CW, Mullen Discovery, Kemper Profiler,Bose L1 Compact |

After some deep conversation with cowboy on his tuning I believe I’ve decided to go with the 12 string universal and his copedent. After him explaining it to me it just makes too much sense. I love the C6 sound and I believe I would regret going the 10 string E9 route. Thanks Johnie King for mentioning it to me and making the wheels in my head start turning! |
