i was thinking about making a bar out of a hardwood dowel flattening one side and installing a guitar fret in the middle of the flat side. this might give the same sustain quality as a six string spanish. has anyone ever tried this? might be a cool way to jump to guitar parts and get the bite guitars have. ya i'm crazy.

Have you tried a plastic prescription pill bottle? It makes more of a banjo sound. Kind of hilarious, actually.

With your idea, you would have to keep the bar almost perfectly steady, with no rolling, as you slide from fret to fret. Also, you might think about wrapping the fret wire up on the ends of the dowel a little so you could move it across from string to string without catching on the blunt metal end of the fret, or muting out on the wood. Interesting, worth a try.

on second thought i wouldn't flatten the side i put the fret on so less likely to drag and even grind it teardrop shaped. maybe file the fret rounded on the ends so not to catch.

I'm thinking that something as narrow as a guitar fret is going to give you a lot of noise when sliding on the wound strings, and it will also probably tend to wear fairly quickly. Oh Well

(I'd also suspect less sustain unless the fret were mounted on a large metallic bar.)

If you have a hobby shop or second hand store near. Check and see if they have any Toy Train Track. Some rails on toy train tracks is shaped like fret stock, It being steel will be harder and last longer than a piece of brass or nickel fret stock, If it gives you the sound you are seeking.
Just a tinkers thought.
