I am watching on PBS a country music tribute celebrating an upcoming Ken Burns documentary on country music. Performances are some of the best I have seen on TV in a long time. Marty Stuart just performed a gutsy solo mandolin performance. Great performances overall. And Paul Franklin is covering the great pedal steel work. Worth watching if you get a chance. The upcoming documentary should be great also.

I agree that mandolin solo of Orange Blossom Special was something to see. Very good performances. Paul Franklin on steel so that made it awesome.

My wife and I watched it last night and really enjoyed it. Definitely a strong tribute to the roots of country music. Sure, people will inevitably grouse about this or that artist being left out ("How could they?") but, from this film, it looks like they got a lot of things right, including (among others): Jimmie Rogers, Sons of the Pioneers, Hank Williams, Flatt & Scruggs, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Dolly, Bob Wills, Willie, Waylon, Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, Brenda Lee, Merle & Buck, Townes Van Zant. And these are just the ones that made it into the highlights reel, so you know there are loads more in the full 8-segment version.

p.s. We also discovered a favorite new artist that we were so impressed by: Rhiannon Giddins. Wow! I'll be following her career and I think it's gonna go way beyond country music.

Very good indeed! I thought it well written and a fair precis of the history of the genre.

The house band was first class! As attuned as I am to picking out steel in a 'busy' mix hearing Paul's contribution was a challenge. It almost sounded to me as though his channel was down and what we could hear was his amp 'leaking' on to a nearby mic. Surely, if they had in fact got him on tape, that should have been corrected in the final mix.

A small criticism of a very enjoyable event.

I agree Roger. Another incredible performance IMO, was Vince's "I will always love you." Dollies song.
