Hi, this is my first post here. I have played 8 string resophonic for years, but just bought a used Emmons steel pedal. Can anyone tell me how the pedals are supposed to be tuned?
Thank you,
Guy |

I used to have a Sho-Bud D-8 40 years ago that came with a tuning minus the usual lower two strings. Seemed to me at the time that the usual top two strings are more important for a beginner to get a handle on. _________________ 2008 Zum D-10, 1996 Mullens PRP D-10, 1974 Emmons D-10, 1976 Emmons D-10, early 70s Emmons GS-10, Milkman Sideman head w/Telonics 15" speaker, 1966 Fender Super Reverb, 1970 Fender Dual Showman head, Wechter/Scheerhorn and Beard Dobros, 1962 Supro lap steels, Gibson 1939 RB-11 banjo, Gibson 1978 RB-250

I agree. I started on a triple 8 string non-pedal guitar. I set up the E9 neck with strings 1 thru 8. That's what I would also do on an 8 string pedal steel guitar. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Again, my '65 ShoBud D-8 (which had 6 pedals, 3 for each neck, 1 knee) came with the lower C6 neck minus the usual two lower strings on a 10-string neck. The 3 pedals for the lower neck were, unlike the top E9 neck, set up in what is now an unusual arrangement. I don't remember exactly what that was but it was more in tune with western swing chording and did not envision the more sophisticated possibilities of today's C6 variations.
However, I do remember that when our band opened up for Vassar Clements's band, his great steel player had no problem getting more out of it than I ever did. Can't remember his name, he drove the bus....... _________________ 2008 Zum D-10, 1996 Mullens PRP D-10, 1974 Emmons D-10, 1976 Emmons D-10, early 70s Emmons GS-10, Milkman Sideman head w/Telonics 15" speaker, 1966 Fender Super Reverb, 1970 Fender Dual Showman head, Wechter/Scheerhorn and Beard Dobros, 1962 Supro lap steels, Gibson 1939 RB-11 banjo, Gibson 1978 RB-250

When I saw Vasser, he had Big Jim Murphy playing. Did the steel player also play sax? _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . I generally setup 8 sting pedal steels w 4 pedals as follows- leaving off the top 2 chromatics:
the 1st pedal raising the E-F
then std AB pedals
then E lowers E-Eb
- that configuration enables the majority of changes that are commonly used for the E9th tuning |

Richard, he very well may have, I just donβt remember - it was the 70s after all. I do recall that he was a very good on steel and he dated my ShoBud to around 1965. I wish I still had that guitar..... _________________ 2008 Zum D-10, 1996 Mullens PRP D-10, 1974 Emmons D-10, 1976 Emmons D-10, early 70s Emmons GS-10, Milkman Sideman head w/Telonics 15" speaker, 1966 Fender Super Reverb, 1970 Fender Dual Showman head, Wechter/Scheerhorn and Beard Dobros, 1962 Supro lap steels, Gibson 1939 RB-11 banjo, Gibson 1978 RB-250

I have my 8 string, 3 and 3 Jackson set up in C6 (top 8 strings of standard 10 string). High to low, DECAGECA
The 3 pedals are set up like pedals 5,6 and 7 on a standard C6 copedent.
LKL does multiple duties--it raises string 7 a half step (like pedal 8 would), it also raises string 1 a half step and lowers string 8 a full step.
RKL lowers string 3 and 7 a half step
RKR lowers string 4 a half step.
This arrangement has been working out pretty well for me.
