I've taken on the challenge of arranging Bix's masterpiece "In A Mist" for steel guitar duet after fooling around with the tune for a few days. The process of arranging for two guitars has been so much fun and makes things possible.
This song should never be played on steel guitar! That said, I'm going to do it anyway because I love it and it is an educational experience. But now matter how you slice it, it's a very difficult piece and I haven't gotten past page 1 yet.
I've been tabbing/notating the arrangement and then recording in chunks, but I already have a good idea of what it sounds like from the midi playback of Tabledit (which I use to tab it). If only my pitch could match up to the midi! Did I mention it's difficult?
Here is a little clip of what I've got complete. This demo has added bass because I wanted to hear it. I'm using two different Clinesmiths: my cast aluminum and my old walnut.

Mike, that sounds great! I like In A Mist on piano, but it would never occur to me to try it on steel because it would be too hard! But I did play I'm Coming Virginia at my first steel guitar show. |

The version of "In a Mist" that Ry Cooder had on his "Jazz" record has always been one of my all time favorites. Guitar and vibes. This version is right up there with it! Good job.

Thanks, Doug! You know and I know, it may not be a great steel guitar tune, but it is opening up other doors for me and giving me the courage to look at getting more deeply involved in arranging some things that I never thought possible. We’ll see how it goes. Your playing of classical pieces as well as Susan Alcorn’s solo performances have given me the guts and incentive to want to go further. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Both my wife, Marianna, and I are Bix fans. I don't hear anything in this piece that precludes steel guitar. Its great music. I think I hear a bit of its influence in Hoagy Carmichael. Mike's sample gets more interesting as it goes along. _________________ Don't go in the water after lunch. You'll get a cramp and drown. - Mother. |

Bix is the man. As a cornet player myself I was never a big fan of this tune. Never hit me like his horn playing. But from a purely technical standpoint, this was phenomenal. Sets a new bar. Great job Mike. _________________ Rose D13 tuning: Cabinet by J.R. Rose with mechanics engineered by Darvin Willhoite.

A little more than half way through this but the middle sections are far more difficult than previous.
It seems really un-steel guitaristic, yet I don't think I could play this on standard guitar. It would be a complete tangle of fingers.

You have a real knack for the unexpected, Mike and when that knack meets the steel guitar, wonderful things happen. _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |
