One of the prettiest songs I think I've every heard.......and this is my effort to do it justice. Dave Karr and I had never played it before and were visiting his sister's home in Medford, years ago..... let's see, that would have been when I was with good ole#4, but that, of course, is ancient history.
I feel Dave was one of the finest guitarist I've ever met. They don't make 'em like that any more.

This song was popular with both sides during the American Civil War, according to the Ken Burns TV series. It really is a beautiful melody, as Jay Unger's version illustrates.

Sonny Garish has a very pretty version on a Bill Anderson album from the 60s or 70s.

It is also very beautiful when played very simply on a dobro.

Also, the piano player in the 'Lonesome Dove' TV movie always played 'Lorena' for the barroom girl, Lorie (sic?)

Thanx,
Jim

Thanks Howard........and for the other comments as well.

Roger, I copied this from Sonny's original arrangement and I realize it wasn't very good. But, it was some twenty years ago when I was much younger.

Real nice playing on a beautiful song. My wife heard it playing and came in to see what it was. I think I need to add it to my playlist.

I don't know who the original artist was. The song is at least 145 years old.
Here are the lyrics and a simple arrangement; http://www.nps.gov/gett/gettkidz/gkmusic/cwsong5.htm
