Bill Lawrence XR16 pickup, but could be any pickup that allows splitting the coil.
Normal mode (humbucker) uses the black(ground) and white wires straight to the Jack. To split the coil into a single coil pickup, you take the red wire to one side of a SPST switch, and the other side of the switch to ground on the Jack too.
My question is, how come the humbucker pickup mode doesn't work at the same time. It's ground is hooked up too. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Humbucker is two coils in series, while single-coil is what you get when one of the coils is shorted to GND via the mid-connection. |

Added FYI: the red wire can also be connected to the jack signal lug along with the white wire, in which case the second coil will act as single-coil and the first coil (with the white wire) will be shorted. Is likely to sound slightly different from your single-coil example.
There are even more ways to connect humbuckers w/split in order to modify how such a PU sounds and acts as humbucker or single-coil, both, or something "in between", but such variations depend on whether the two coils are wired as separate coils (two wires each) or are in series with one tap wire attached. Adding external capacitors and/or inductors into the mix can let us shape sound and behavior even further. Lots of fun can be had for those who like to experiment |
