Topic: Cleaning pickup pole pieces??? |

I have Lawrence 710's, and the pole pieces show some rust (??)/blackening from my wrist sweating on them. Is there a way to clean those up?

Well, if you don't have a Dremel tool, you can use a pencil or pen with a good eraser. Break or cut it off the eraser end so it's about 1 1/2" long, and chuck it in a small drill. Careful work will let you polish up the magnets without scratching the plastic. If you're not steady with your hands, just mask off the plastic with scotch tape. (Note: Ballpoint pen erasers will cut a little faster than those from a pencil because they have more grit.)
I've also done some engine-turning on small aluminum parts by using the same "tool" on a drill-press.  |

I do have a Dremel. What bit would I use? I may try the eraser first.

| If I were using a Dremel, I'd use the abrasive wool buffs. These are like small round Scotchbrite pads. You'd have to make a small template, though, so they wouldn't go awry and mess up the plastic cover. |

| Since you have a Dremel tool. Dremel sells a polish tip, It looks like a pencil eraser about an 1"-1 1/2" long, It has molded in fine abrasive. Attaches to a screw tip mandrel. Great for polishing small items. |

I hope you have better luck than I did Richard. I tried everything I know on this one, see pole 10 pickup on the right in photo. Nothing touched it. I even tried sanding to no avail. This was some really hard stuff. Looked just like it did when I started.

I dunno Jerry...both of those look fine to me? 
I didn't know Dremel made the rubber/grit polishing tips, they should be ideal. The goal should be to clean up any tarnish or rust. Trying to make them sparkle like a headstock or endplate is a fools errand, since they're "drill-bit hard". You can do it with silicone carbide, but believe me, it ain't worth the time and effort. |

Mine is much worse than that. Several of the posts are discolored.

Google "Cratex" abrasives...
