Topic: Need a tech to check out my NV400 |

Hi guys -
Pulled out a NV 400 of mine and was surprised to hear that there is a a distortion that shouldn't be there. A low end, airy thud type distortion. Was first thinking it might be the speaker... the reverb tank has been removed.
I have troubleshooted this thing and have deducted that it is the pre-amp section. I connected another pre-amp to the power amp in on the NV400. Sounds normal.
There are no mods..it is 100% stock.
Either way, I would like to have someone go through it and give it some tech bench love.
Ideally, I would send you the amp itself and leave the cab and speaker here.
Any suggestions on who is the best at this?

Send it to Peavey. They are reasonable and quick. Only need to send chassis and reverb spring. Even though you don't use the spring, send it anyway.

Yes, send it to Peavey. Call Mike Brown first and he will arrange "priority" repair.
More than likely it is just a dirty switching jack.
Have you tried using a short patch cable and connecting (on the back of the amp) a cord from the PreAmp out to the Power Amp in. This bypasses the switching jack and if it works, just leave the cable there. Won't hurt a thing.
Also, try plugging your cable from your volume pedal to the amp into the PreEQ Patch IN and see if that helps.
If either one of these work, you can continue to use your amp that way.
If they don't then you probably should send it in.
Take the chassis out and pack it carefully in a Heavy Guage Box, with lots of cushion around the chassis.

| Better yet, I highly suggest that you purchase a can of Peavey Funk Out FIRST! Then spray each input and output jack. Insert a 1/4" plug into each about ten to 15 times and then check for proper operation of the amplifier. |

| Plug a cable into fx send and return jacks and see if the amp sounds normal again. IIRC, there are jacks on the front as well. Do them one at a time. |
